Matter — the smart-home spec

Matter is an open, royalty-free smart-home protocol from the Connectivity Standards Alliance. This page indexes everything we know about the spec from connectedhomeip: clusters and their revisions, device types, and which clusters ship in each Matter release.

Concepts

The pieces of a Matter device. Click through for the corresponding index page.

Cluster

A self-contained capability — On/Off, Temperature Measurement, Door Lock. Devices expose one or more clusters on each endpoint.

Device Type

A named combination of mandatory and optional clusters that defines what a device can do — e.g. "On/Off Light", "Door Lock", "Thermostat".

Endpoint

A logical sub-unit of a device. A power strip might expose one endpoint per outlet, each acting as its own On/Off device type.

Binding

A direct device-to-device link, so a switch can control a light without round-tripping through a hub.
